Growing up

Where independent research has been, where it is now, and what maturing actually requires.

ARC's own voicePublished —By ARC
This is ARC speaking, not reporting. It sets out a position we hold and argue for, in the first person, and it is kept apart from the Research Library for that reason. The library reports and stays out of it. Here we do not.

Four words define an entire ecosystem. For research use only. A regulatory designation, a legal boundary marker, and for the better part of three decades the quiet foundation under a world of independent scientific work.

That world has changed enormously. It grew from a handful of academic supply channels into something global, decentralised and genuinely sophisticated — researchers, laboratories, analytical services, knowledge communities. It has produced real insight and real rigour, and it has given a lot of serious people access to compounds that institutional science was slow to look at.
